Getting there

Koh Samui travel & transport guide to kitesurf school shop

Airport

Koh Samui has its own international airport. There are many daily flights from the International and from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. You will also find some flights from Bangkok to Suratthani. When you’re there, just catch the bus or taxi to the ferry in Donsak.

Bus

If you prefer a more economical way to travel, you can go for bus. We recommend the one called VIP bus from the well-known Khao San Road or from the Southern Bus Terminal at Boromrat Chonnani Road. The VIP buses are more comfortable and have fewer seats than the one called A/C bus. You can buy a ticket in almost every travel agency in Bangkok. The ferry ticket is sometimes included in the price.

Train

Another comfortable way to travel is the night train from Hualamphong, (the Bangkok railway station) to Suratthani. The sleeping carts have rather comfortable beds. To travel by railway is a little more expensive than the bus, but you will probably get a better sleep.

Ferry

You have few options, first you can take the ferry from Donsak to Koh Samui and you will have to choose between two companies, Seatran and Raja Ferry. Or you can take the Lomprayah high speed catamaran from Chumphon (they offer you to take the bus from Banglamphu in Bangkok if you want).

Getting around the island

Bicycle

Just rent it. It’s cheap. But be very careful if the traffic is intense.

Motorbike/Scooter

The most common transportation here. From 100 cc (smaller bikes such as; Honda Click, Honda Wave, Honda Dream, Yamaha Nouvo, Yamaha Mio etc), to Harley Davidson. Prices from 120 THB per day and up. Please use a helmet and drive safely. Police sometimes as for international driving licence, but the fine is only 200 Baht.

Pickup Taxi (Songtaew)

These modified pickup trucks start from early morning until late in the night. Price: 20-50 Baht, but it’s more expensive after 6 pm. After this time you will have to negotiate the price.

Car

You can rent a jeep or a car. Prices start from about 700 Baht a day. Just give us a call and we will arrange this for you.

Taxi

Convenient! But most of them do not use the taximeter. Ask for the price in advance. The prices usually start from about 100 baht and up to 600-700 baht for a ride from Nathon to Lamai or similar distance. We can also arrange this for you
